Toddler Storytime is a weekly morning program where children ages 0 - 5 and their caregivers can learn, explore, and socialize outside of normal library hours! Each week features a different theme that we explore through books, songs, movement, and crafts. Toddler Storytime is once a week for 8 - 10 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can attend Toddler Storytime?
Toddler Storytime is intended for children ages 0 - 5 and their parents or caregivers. Older siblings may attend but might not find this program to be as stimulating due to its intended audience.
How long is Toddler Storytime?
Toddler Storytime is one hour (10 - 11 AM).
What do you do at Toddler Storytime?
We start with a welcome song, followed by librarian and attendee introductions. We go over storytime rules, answer any questions that parents or caregivers - or children - might have, and talk about the storytime theme.
We read anywhere from 3 - 6 books that pertain to the storytime theme. These books are broken up by songs, fingerplays, dances, or flannel board activities that also tie into the chosen theme. Storytime usually lasts about 30 minutes or half of the program hour.
When storytime is over, we have social/play time in the Creative Learning Center as well as a craft or activity in the storytime area for children to do. Caregivers are welcome to socialize as well!
Do my child and I have to stay for the duration of the program?
You and your child(ren) do not have to stay for the full hour of Toddler Storytime. This is a come-and-go program! We recognize that some little bodies are more wiggly and ready for social time, while others are more quiet and prefer to engage with the stories. That's perfectly fine: show up when you like and leave when you're ready.
A note for this program: all children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Children cannot be dropped off or left unattended.
Is the library open during Toddler Storytime?
The library is closed during Toddler Storytime. This is a special morning program and the rest of the library - including the basement, Teen, and Adult Department - are unavailable to patrons.

Books for Babies
One of the best gifts you can give your child is a love of reading! This Friends of the Library literacy program acquaints parents of newborns with the important role they play in the development of their children. By reading to their babies and by becoming regular library users themselves, parents help their babies develop language skills and start them on the path to success in reading and learning.
Visit the Youth Department with your newest arrival and receive two free board books as a congratulations - and as a start to building up your child's early literacy!
1000 Books Before Kindergarten
This incentive-based early literacy program is sponsored by the Jefferson Public Library and Partnerships 4 Families. For every 100 books you read with your child, you will receive a sticker and a small prize.
What if my child wants to read the same book every night?
That still counts toward your reading goal! Studies show that repetition encourages imitation and understanding of concepts that are crucial in early childhood development. Reading aloud and reading with your child every night - even if it is "Llama Llama, Red Pajama" - stimulates important foundational brain development.
